Tracking outbreaks in real-time

Genomic analyses of wastewater enable detailed monitoring of community pathogen evolution and spread

Measure. Analyze. Communicate.

Overview

As we develop and standardize the protocols and methods for effective wastewater surveillance, we are also testing and deploying these approaches in our local communities, both across South Africa and in the San Diego, California region. We release our findings in real-time in order to inform timely and effective public health guidance, and develop platforms to aggregate, disseminate, and visualize pathogen spread and evolution via wastewater data.

Regional Wastewater Surveillance in San Diego

Scripps Research scientists, in collaboration with the SEARCH alliance, leads a regional wastewater surveillance program that includes three large wastewater treatment plants,  covering over 3 million people in the San Diego county.

Nationwide Wastewater Surveillance in South Africa

NICD researchers run a nationwide wastewater-based surveillance program that includes 15 sites across 5 provinces. We are already providing COVID-19 variant monitoring for nearly all major urban centers in the country, and are working to establish the future of outbreak monitoring in South Africa.

Outbreak.info

Scripps Research scientists lead the outbreak.info project, which provides web platforms and APIs to analyze trends in SARS-CoV-2 clinical test and sequence data. As clinical surveillance data has become sparse, we are now expanding outbreak.info to accommodate wastewater testing and sequencing data.
